On the traditional territory of Treaty 6, on Crown land inside Violet King Henry Plaza during Canada Day week in 2021, I reached a gentleman’s agreement by handshake with Alberta’s Sergeant-at-Arms, Chris Caughell, witnessed by Assc. Sergeant-at-Arms Tom Bell. We agreed that should any personal artwork displayed on my clothing within the Alberta Legislative Assembly be viewed as distracting inside the house of the people, I would cover it with a jacket or sweater for the duration of the sitting in the gallery.

This mutual understanding concluded the “ 2020, Freedom to Express and Listen” art project, including its reference to restrictions on speech and attire. The project had drawn inspiration from Virgil Abloh’s 2019 exhibition Figures of Speech. I continue to exercise my right to observe and report from the public gallery—now in my ninth year since 2017—wearing the simplified “LISTEN” label as my commitment to practice free expression.
